Obituary for Mathis Leroy Walker, Sr.
MATHIS LEROY WALKER, Sr., was born in Tallahassee, Florida to the late Jessie and Sadie Lee
Walker. He was the oldest of four sons.
Mathis attended school in Leon and Lake Counties.
He was converted at an early age and moved to Leesburg, where he met the former Jeanette Rawls.
They were united in holy matrimony, and together they were the parents of Jackie, Mathis Jr.,
Donald, and Kenneth Walker.
He was employed by Rexall and Burry’s, and was an independent driver for these pharmacies,
delivering prescriptions to many who needed his help for over 60 years. He was known to many
children as “The Candy Man.”
Deacon Mathis joined Mount Calvary Baptist Church for many years and then Mount Sinai until
his health began to fail. He was an active member at Sunday school and morning worship. He
served his country in the military Army branch for two years.
He leaves to cherish his memories and live his legacy: his two children, Jackie and Donald; his
two deceased children, Mathis Jr. and Kenneth; his brother, Tommy Williams; Deacon Emeritus
Citadel of Hope Ministry (Charlene); 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; two great-greatgrandchildren; several nieces, nephews, many cousins, and many, many sorrowing friends
