It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Austin Clarence Parkinson
on October 22, 2024, at 10:35 PM. Born on August 29, 1944, in Jamaica, West Indies, to
Clarence Austin Parkinson and Zella James-Parkinson. Austin’s life was defined by unwavering
love, service, and dedication.
Austin received his early education at Central Branch Primary School before attending
Clarendon College High School. It was during these formative years that he met Marlene, his
lifelong love, during a soccer match he was playing in. Though their paths diverged, they were
later reunited by a close mutual friend—a fortuitous encounter that blossomed into a loving
marriage in 1978.
In 1964, Austin immigrated to the United States to pursue his studies at the Coyne Electrical
Institute in Chicago, specializing in electrical engineering. His time in Chicago revealed his
talents beyond academia: he joined a local cricket team, and his passion for music led him to
become a DJ, filling countless gatherings with joy through the vibrant rhythms of calypso.
Austin later shared this musical legacy with his son, and together, they built an extensive record
collection that stands as a testament to their shared passion.
In 1975, Austin relocated to New York City, where he and Marlene later settled in Long Island.
Here, he became an integral part of the St. John’s Episcopal Church in Hempstead, New York,
offering his time generously to the men’s fellowship group. Austin’s contributions were always
quiet and without need for recognition—an embodiment of his humble and compassionate
nature.
Throughout his distinguished career at Hofstra University, Austin’s exemplary professionalism
and dedication earned him awards for perfect attendance and deep admiration from colleagues.
Rising to the position of Foreman of the Electrical Department, he was respected for his
leadership, humility, and unwavering work ethic.
Austin embraced life fully, finding great joy in fishing, bowling, solving crossword puzzles,
and playing Scrabble. Ever-present at family celebrations, from birthdays to graduations, he
cherished each moment, enriching the lives of his grandchildren with his steady, supportive
presence. He believed in savoring life’s simple pleasures—good food, frequent travel, and
treating each person with kindness and respect, regardless of their status.
Following in the distinguished footsteps of his father and great-grandfather, Austin became
a proud member of the Mechanic Lodge, where he attained the esteemed rank of Venerable,
exemplifying tradition, leadership, and integrity. Even after moving to Florida, Austin continued
his spiritual journey as a dedicated member of the Men’s Fellowship at St. Mathias Episcopal
Church, a community that brought him immense fulfillment.
Austin is survived by his beloved wife, Marlene Parkinson; children, Cheryl Parkinson, Austin
Parkinson, and Hanzel Parkinson; treasured grandchildren, Arianne Cesar, Alexander Brown,
Austin Parkinson III, Brianna Brown, Godfrey Brown, Hanzel Parkinson, Jr., Jada Dresher,
Jaden Underwood, Joseph Kaufman, Maelani Parkinson, Mason Antmann, and his late

Greer, Skye Monroe, Kingston Joseph, and Kairo Joseph; along with his loving sisters, Lelieth
Parkinson, Patricia Brown, and his late sister, Sonia Montgomery; and many cousins across the
world also hold him in their hearts.
Austin will be remembered for his gentle spirit, unshakeable faith, and deep commitment
to family and community. Austin’s signature farewell, “Tauh tau,” will forever echo in the
memories of all who were blessed to know him. His life was a beacon of kindness, love, and joy,
and his legacy will continue to illuminate the hearts of those he touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Austin’s name to St.
Mathias Church.
